Song and dance group
“Song and dance ensembles” in Poland are artistic formations that combine elements of music, singing and dance in stylized performances inspired by folk tradition. Their heyday was during the communist period, when state authorities promoted folk culture as a way to build national identity and strengthen patriotism. These ensembles were tasked not only with preserving folk traditions, but also with stylizing them, adapting them for the stage and the general public.
This adaptation was aimed at making folklore more accessible and attractive to mass audiences, while also fitting in with the propaganda goals of the authorities. After the fall of the People’s Republic of Poland, these ensembles continue to function, continuing their mission of promoting and adapting folk heritage. Recently, we have seen them flourish anew.
Their repertoire includes songs, dances and costumes from various regions of Poland, transformed to suit the aesthetic and ideological requirements of the time. Performances are often staged on large stages, festivals and broadcast in the media.
